Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries. It is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) and given as two numbers: systolic (pressure when heart beats) and diastolic (pressure when heart rests).
High blood pressure (hypertension) usually has no warning signs but can lead to life-threatening conditions like heart attack and stroke.
A normal reading is typically less than 120/80 mm Hg. If your readings are consistently higher, you should consult a doctor.
Emergency: If your blood pressure is higher than 180/120 mm Hg and you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, back pain, numbness/weakness, or change in vision, call 911 immediately.
